Toolkits in Bridges Grades 4 & 5

Although I was born without the gene dedicated to organization, other teachers excel in this area.


Hundreds Grid Game

Bridges Grades 2 and 3 spend time with the hundreds grid during Number Corner. In second grade, classes keep track of the days in school on the hundreds grid, expanding their exploration to try to identify a "mystery number" that has been placed ahead on the chart. Early in third grade, students develop their computation skills and number sense by noticing many different patterns and sequences of numbers on the grid.


Teaching Traumatized Children

Over the last several years I've encountered more and more traumatized children in the classroom. I likely taught many in my early career as well, although at that time I failed to recognize the signs of trauma or to understand the impact it could have on a child's ability to learn. Trauma may be caused by any number of experiences including, but not limited to: domestic violence, moves from family to family, inconsistent or inadequate care, neglect, or abuse.


Polydrons for All Ages!

Young students enjoy creating 2- and 3- dimensional shapes using the Polydron squares and triangles included with kindergarten and first grade Bridges Packages. Yet this manipulative is adaptable to a wide variety of ages and abilities. When I taught a group of 4th-6th grade gifted students, I brought along a set a Polydrons.
