Managing Dice...or Teeny Tiny Manipulative Storage
On Little Miss Kindergarten's blog, Mrs. Coe posted an idea for managing runaway dice. If students have trouble keeping dice under control, simply place dice in mini plastic storage containers to make dice-shaker-boxes. After seeing this idea, I easily located a pack of ten at a nearby discount store for a dollar. My containers are shallow enough that you must give them a good shake in order to get the dice to consistently change numbers. But for most kids, a hearty shake will just make the game that much more fun. When the dice come to rest, there's no debate about the outcome and no need to go on an under-desk-retrieval-mission.
The same teeny tiny boxes might make good storage for other little math manipulatives. Linear edge pieces? Centimeter cubes?
