Magic Square Math
Want to have a little fun with magic squares? Try the following:
Read Ben Franklin and the Magic Squares
Don't let the "Step into Reading" genre dissuade you from reading this book aloud. Students throughout elementary grades will be amused as Franklin, bored, doodles during the Pennsylvania Colonial Assembly, creating magic math squares to entertain himself.
Milk Cap Math Game
Create your own magic square student game sets by recycling milk caps. Label each set of caps with numbers 1-9. Challenge students to arrange them in 3x3 rows to total 15 diagonally, vertically, and horizontally. The movement of the milk caps encourages students to try many different combinations. Online Magic Square Games
The Magic Square Game - Like Franklin's Magic Square, the total of each row, column, and diagonal must equal 15.
Magic Squares - In this version, students can choose from a variety of levels as they change the target number.
Magic Square games are a nice extension to Grade 5, Work Place 1A, 15-Tac-Toe.

If you have kids who like the 39 clues book, Benjamin Franklin's fascination with Magic Squares becomes a key plot point in the first book. Dan and Amy, the main characters in the book, have to solve a Magic Square left as a clue in the past by Benjamin Franklin to get the next clue in their treasure hunt/race.
