Calendar Grid Turkeys

Over at Little Miss Kindergarten, Mrs. Coe and her Kindergartners from Veda Knox Elementary in Arlington, Texas, decided to add their own creative twist to the November Calendar Grid.

She began by reading the book, Setting the Turkeys Free, in which "A young boy uses his hands, paint, sequins, and everything imaginable to make beautiful turkeys in his picture. Soon his imagination takes over, and the turkeys take on a life of their own." After reading the book, Mrs. Coe's  Kindergartners created their own handprint turkeys using two different colors of paper for an AB patterned background. She then followed instructions for the November Calendar Pattern (premade markers), C3 Flying Butterflies. In this grid, Kindergartners use and model words that indicate direction--up, down, to the right, and to the left--as they identify, describe and extend simple repeating patterns. Instead of using butterflies, however, her class used their TURKEYS!

Mrs. Coe shares details about her students' reflections at Little Miss Kindergarten. What an incredible learning experience. She writes, "My class has had so much fun with this that yesterday they asked...when are we working on December?!"

Thank you for sharing your creativity, Mrs. Coe! And a Happy Thanksgiving to all!

The turkeys also work great for first grade quilt squares -- instead of sea stars, turkey hand prints (also 5s!) set the stage.

Dennis Adams, MLC curriculum specialist and longtime kindergarten teacher notes that he would probably have kids make calendar pieces three times during the year. He writes, "The act of making (as in ants, sea stars, sea creatures) adds a dimension that is missing when everything is pre-made and your job is just to analyze it."

Thanks, Dennis!
