Illuminations Game: Flip-n-Slide

During the month of November, fourth graders observe a "Tumbling Triangle." This Calendar Grid activity depicts a single triangle in a different location on a quadrant grid each day as it moves through a series of transformations: slides, turns, and flips. Through the pattern, students develop language and concepts of motion geometry.

A new game by NCTM Illuminations complements these lessons. In "Flip-n-Slide" the game board is a coordinate grid covered with an assortment of ladybugs and fireflies. During a turn, players build a transformation--a series of slides, turns, and flips--that will allow them to capture the most insects.

If students need a little assistance in understanding reflections, turn to the student-generated videos at Mathtrain.TV. Kat, a 7th grader, gives a brief tutorial on how to make a reflection on a coordinate grid, y-axis.

These activities also serve as extensions for the September Grade 5 Calendar Grid.
