Mathwire's Measurement Man

In Grade 4 Number Corner, October's Calendar Collector titled "A Cup a Day," provides opportunities for students to measure capacity as they explore equivalent fractions and carry out simple unit conversions within the U.S. customary system. A recent post in Mathwire, "Measurement Man" would provide a nice extension as students build another visual representation of the relationship between cups, pints, quarts, and gallons.

Last week, when I did this activity, a nearby adult started quizzing a student about equivalencies within the U.S. customary system. When the student responded, I caught the adult looking at "Measurement Man" to check the answers. It is a very effective representation!

I have used Measurement Man in 2nd and 3rd grades and made up a "rap" for students to chant along with it.  Here it is:

Measurement Man, Measurement Man

Fill up a gallon as fast as you can,

2 cups in a pint, 2 pints in a quart,

4 quarts in a gallon, and that's my report!

Enjoy!
