Math Vocabulary Cards

First grade teacher Shelly Scheafer discovered a web resource for math vocabulary cards that support Common Core State Standards. The site includes CCSS word lists and vocabulary cards by grade level as well as vocabulary card templates for educators to make their own cards.


Counting Strategies Poster

On the Delaware Department of Education math page, you'll find a poster entitled "Counting Strategies" under the first grade materials.


Going Home with Work Place Planners

Shannon Gilmore, District 196 Elementary Math Trainer in Minnesota, shares an idea that the second grade team at Highland Elementary recently developed. She writes, "They shrink down the Work Place Planners to 25% of the original size, copy sets of the planners, cut them apart, and then staple them inside a folder. This is a way to save paper and have all the Work Place planners ready to go for the year.


First Grade Word Problems and the CCSS

Shelly Scheafer, first grade teacher from Bend, Oregon, shares an idea for Unit 1 story problems. She writes:

The first grade Bridges curriculum provides many opportunities for students to solve and write story problems on their own. Beginning in Unit 1, students act out bug problems and use plastic bug manipulatives for telling and solving problems.
