Ten-Strips & Frames Using the Number Rack App

MLC's Number Rack App provides a tech alternative to traditional models such as ten-strips and ten-frames. Let's consider a couple examples.

Calendar Grid Observations

Recently, I've been teaching two math groups, back-to-back. In an effort to make use of every possible moment, I created a Calendar Grid Observation Sheet for the fourth grade students to work on as they arrive. While I wouldn't use this with every workout, I like the accountability; it presses students to individually focus on what they know before we begin the group discussion.

A Bridges Inspired Halloween!

The kindergarten teachers at Calhoun Primary School in Georgia are ready for Halloween. Academic Intervention Specialist Hayley Gilreath writes, "I thought I would share these photos to demonstrate how you impact education even on Halloween. Our kindergarten teachers dressed up as ladybugs and spiders. Their inspiration? Number Corner!


Engaging Diverse Learners in Mathematical Practices

I've been working with an extremely diverse group of learners, looking at the 4th Grade October Number Corner Calendar Grid. At the beginning of the month one experienced Bridges student detected a pattern, labeling it "base 4." Another child was unable to detect any patterns; even when asked to pair-share, the child couldn't come up with an idea on what the next day might look like.
