Bridges Grade K Advice for Sessions 20-33

I hope September went well and now your kids know everything about shapes. The first four days of October are devoted to starting new calendar routines as your sole whole-group math instruction. (All-day K may find time for Work Places in addition to the calendar changeover). If you are a half-day K teacher, consider compressing those four days into two or three so you can get in more whole-group lessons.

Number Corner Grade 1 Advice for October

I hope things went well in September and you learned to get your calendar routines down to a speedy five minutes so you could get on to the daily challenges. If you weren’t able to get all of the daily challenges completed, continue on with them in October.

Organizing Overhead Manipulatives

One of my most useful possessions? A fishing tackle box.

Although I haven't fished since I was a kid, I use an 11x7x3" tackle box to hold my overhead manipulatives. My box has a double layer; I needed it to be compact to fit in small spaces on carts or tables, but I wished for a lot of storage. The compartment arrangement was custom-built using plastic dividers included with the box, purchased inexpensively at a local sporting goods store.

Assessment in Bridges

Kindergarten Calendar Display Idea

If your kindergartners make their own markers for the calendar, here is a new idea. At the end of each month, remove the markers from the calendar grid pocket chart and glue them onto a sheet of butcher paper. Early the next month, hang the chart and invite your students to make observations. Add a title and some of their comments, and you have a beautiful and mathematically powerful display.

Pre-Made Calendar Markers for Grade 1

If you find that you don’t have time in your busy schedule for children to make the calendar markers each month, we have developed pre-made sets for October, November, January, February, March, and April. We will add sets for December and May within the next couple of months.  All of the sets developed so far revolve around geometry, one of three major areas the NCTM Focal Points target for first grade instruction.
