Bridges Units Resource & Tech Links – Grade 5

The following resources extend beyond the current Bridges program and complement specific Bridges Units. These resources may be used to provide students additional challenge or support or teachers may decide to share some of them with families so students can review content at home.

Sessions on the matrix include reference to the CCSS Supplement Sets listed at the end of the new unit planners in which they appear.

Unit 2 – Seeing & Understanding Multi-Digit Multiplication & Division

Remainders Count - form an equation from 3 given numbers that will result in the largest remainder. 14 Game Division with Remainders Great game for independent practice.

Quotient Cafe - this NCTM activity allows a player to choose a food to divide among characters. As the food is doled out, students explore partial quotients ("chunking")  in a long division problem. 1-20 Activity Division Choose a dividend from 1-500 and a divisor from 1-50, or allow the computer to randomly select numbers.

Star Gazing - locate planets by setting telescope at a particular angle in this Cyberchase game. 6-10 Game Geometry - Angles Starts simply with increasing levels of difficulty.
Symmetry - players create symmetrical figures and find lines of symmetry in this futuristic mission. 12 Game Geometry - Symmetry Fairly simple review of symmetry.
2D Shapes with Dick & Dom - explore a castle to find the perfect potion bottle by recognizing various 2D shapes. 13-14 Game Geometry - 2D Shapes Reviews geometric vocabulary including: equilateral triangle, parallelogram, similar shapes, perimeter, trapezoid & hexagon.
Mummy Math - two children use their knowledge of geometric solids to locate a burial chamber in an Egyptian pyramid. 19 Book Geometry - 3D figures Good review of faces, edges, vertices prior to Home Connection 30.
3D Shapes - futuristic mission in which players use knowledge of 3D shapes to escape Roboidz. 19-Home Connection 30 Game Geometry - 3D figures Sort 3D objects by faces, edges, vertices. Name various 3D shapes; some terms are different than those used in Bridges. Match 3D shapes to nets.
Building Houses with Side Views - view plans for a structure from top, front, and right views. Then build it. 18-21 Activity Geometry - 3D figures Build 3D objects from 2D representations.

Triangle Sort - watch a brief movie about properties of equilateral, isosceles, and scalene triangles, then sort triangles into Venn diagrams. CCSS Supplement C1, Activity 1 Activity Triangles Look for "Triangle Sort" on the page of activities.
Shapes Sort - sort a variety of shapes into the correct categories as they move along an assembly line. Sort by Quadrilaterals (categorized by 4 equal sides, 2 equal sides, no equal sides) or Triangles (equilateral, isosceles, scalene.) CCSS Supplement C1 Activity Triangles & Quadrilaterals Look for "Shapes" toward the bottom of the page.
Area of a Parallelogram - in this NCTM Interactive Geometry Dictionary (IGD) applet, you can drag vertices to change size/shape of a parallelogram, slice the parallelogram and slide pieces to create a rectangle to find the area of the parallelogram. Also see Area of a Triangle and Area of a Rectangle. CCSS Supplement C1, Activity 3-4 Activity Parallelograms Applet provides another visual model for finding the perimeter & area of a parallelogram. This activity does demonstrate how to find the area of a parallelogram; it's best used after students have done some of their own exploration. Good follow-up questions included.
Cubes - this NCTM activity allows you to virtually fill a box with cubes. Change box sizes as desired. CCSS Supplement D2, Activity 1-2 Activity Volume A virtual version of D2: Activities 1-2; it would make a nice follow-up for home or school.

The Lion's Share - the Lion King's greedy guests pass around a cake, each taking half of what remains, leaving the ant with a mere crumb. CCSS Supplement A9 Book Multiply & Divide Fractions This book could serve as an introduction to the concept of multiplying and dividing fractions. In the later part of the book, the animals try to best one another by doubling the amount of cakes they agree to bake for the king.
Powers of Ten - YouTube video starts at a picnic and zooms out to the edge of universe and then back to an atom, all by powers of ten. Also see Secret Worlds: The Universe Within.
