Bridges Units Resource & Tech Links – Grade 1

The following resources extend beyond the current Bridges program and complement specific Bridges Units. These resources may be used to provide students additional challenge or support or teachers may decide to share some of them with families so students can review content at home.

Sessions on the matrix include reference to the CCSS Supplement Sets listed in the order recommended by the CCSS Pacing Guide.

Crazy Pattern Machine - choose the missing figure to build repeating patterns with shapes, letters, numbers. Any Activity Patterns  
Pattern Matcher - find the repeating pattern that matches a given pattern. Any Activity Pattern Level 1 shows the same set of pictures. In Level 2 the same pattern is shown but with different pictures.
Number Rack App - free app from MLC. Rows of moveable, colored beads encourage learners to think in groups of fives and tens, helping them to explore addition/subtraction strategies. Any App Counting, Addition, Subtraction Use online version or load to iPod Touch, iPhone, or iPad.
Saucer Sorter - teaching tool. Students close eyes as teacher covers a number on a number line or moves numbers around. Students then figure out the missing number or sort numbers. Estimate & Count Marbles - students get a quick glimpse of marbles in a bowl. The marbles disappear, students estimate, and the marbles reappear so they can be moved and counted. Guess My Button - ask questions to sort & classify and determine the secret button. 15-18, Work Place 1J Activity Sorting Teacher-led activity after students have some experience with sorting. Teacher will ask students to select questions like "Is the button round?" and have student eliminate options until the secret button is located.

Buzzing Along a Number Line - a bee moves up and down a number line. Teaching tool. (Requires a small annual subscription fee. TESiboard+ activity.) Investigating Growing Patterns - Mathwire contains a wide array of growing pattern explorations. 6-7 Activities Growing Patterns Mathwire is an excellent source of standards-based math activities that could be used as extensions.

One is a Snail, Ten is a Crab: A Counting by Feet Book - add animal feet. Odd numbers are created by adding even-numbered animal feet plus one snail. 9-11 Book Addition Complements the construction of crab legs in lesson 9.
Flip Counter - this resource models counting by 10's. 10-11 Activity Count by 10's This model clearly shows which digits change as you count by 10's. Could be used as a quick wrap-up for crab counting.

Visual Numbers - form visual models of numbers from 1-20 and place on a number line. Visual model can be hidden. Teaching tool for group work. TESiboard. 19-22 Activity Numbers 1-20 Use this tool to further explore teen numbers. Students could build a model for a number with unifix cubes, check the answer, then place the number on the line.
Number Balance - teacher demonstration tool for group work with simple equations. Create equations on both sides of a balance and then check to see if the sides are equivalent. Supplement A4 Activity Equivalent Expressions Look for the "Number Balance KS1" activity.
